About the role
This project, to be carried out in Paul Nurse’s laboratory will investigate the molecular mechanisms determining nuclear size and nuclear position within the fission yeast cell. It has been shown that a control system determines the size of the nucleus maintaining it at a fixed proportion with respect to the total size of the cell. The purpose of this part of the project is to identify the molecules involved and to determine the mechanism by which the control operates. The second part of the project will be to investigate how nuclei are maintained centrally in the middle of the cell. Genesinvolved in these processes will be identified by screens of a genome wide gene deletion strain collection. Deletion strains with altered nuclear size and position will be isolated, the equivalent genes cloned, and their molecular functions investigated.
About you
The specific skills required for this project are as follows: extensive experience working with fission yeast, including molecular genetics, genetic screens, cell morphological analyses, gene cloning and manipulation, biochemistry and sophisticated microscopy. This is a complex project and so requires someone with experience, determination and the ability to think through detailed problems. It requires a Ph.D. and preferably some post-doctoral experience.
