Steffi Oesterreich, Ph.D., an expert in estrogen receptor biology and action, has been appointed director of education for the newly formed Women’s Cancer Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI). Her appointment was effective Aug. 1.

“We are excited to have Dr. Oesterreich join the UPCI family,” said Nancy E. Davidson, M.D., director of UPCI and UPMC Cancer Centers. “Her accomplishments and her leadership skills make her the perfect choice to lead training and education in our new center dedicated to women’s cancer research.”

Before joining UPCI, Dr. Oesterreich served as an associate professor of medicine and molecular and cellular biology, as well as the co-director of the Nuclear Receptor Program, at the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She also was instrumental in establishing a graduate program called Translational Biology and Molecular Medicine, which is specifically designed to teach Ph.D. students interested in clinical aspects of scientific research.

An accomplished cancer researcher, Dr. Oesterreich has received many awards and recognition for her work, including an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship in 2006, the Women’s Health Research Award from the Endocrine Society in 2002, and a Howard Temin Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 1998. Her work has been supported by the NCI, the Department of Defense and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She has presented at over 50 national and international conferences in the last 15 years.

Dr. Oesterreich received her doctorate from Max-Delbrück- Center for Molecular Medicine, Humboldt University in Berlin, and completed her post-doctoral training at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio.

“The new Women’s Cancer Research Center combines the existing joint efforts at UPCI and MWRI in the fields of breast and gynecological cancers,” said Yoel Sadovsky, M.D., director of MWRI. “Dr. Oesterreich is particularly well-positioned to collaborate with existing scientists in promoting research in this greatly needed area of women’s health.”

“I am thrilled to be taking on this role and grateful for the opportunity to make a significant impact on cancer research for women,” said Dr. Oesterreich. “I am looking forward to interacting directly with many brilliant minds in this great city.”
