Nuvilex, Inc. Announces Completion Of Acquisition Of Pancreatic Cancer Treatment Technology
Nuvilex, Inc. (OTCQB: NVLX) announces it has completed the acquisition of pancreatic cancer treatment technology from a world leader in living-cell encapsulation technology.
The technology involves the targeted delivery of encapsulated living cells that are capable of delivering and converting standard inactive chemotherapeutic cancer drugs (pro-drugs) into active, chemotherapeutic (cancer-fighting) drugs directly to the pancreatic tumor. In addition, this technology allows for the use of overall lower pro-drug doses, dramatically decreasing the overall body exposure to such toxic agents, yet with greater clinical effect. This positive clinical effect is due to the mechanism of delivery of the final active cancer-fighting drug, namely the encapsulated pro-drug-converting living cells specifically delivered to the pancreatic tumor site.
There are several advantages to using encapsulated living cells to create and deliver active pancreatic cancer-fighting agents; these include the ability to:
1. deliver the cancer-fighting drug-containing cells directly into the pancreatic tumor,
2. spare surrounding tissues and organs,
3. decrease exposure of the entire body to the active cancer-fighting drug, and
4. reduce the occurrence of typical problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash, that often occur with standard cancer drug use.
The cells used in this technology have been widely used in cell biology for many years and have been approved for use in humans specifically when employed using this proprietary technology. In the event that some cells were to “escape” from encapsulation, they would be destroyed rapidly by the body’s normal defense mechanisms. The cell encapsulation material itself has been tested extensively and is not immunogenic. Testing has proven this material does not cause deleterious effects or any adverse allergic reactions when used in animals or humans. The encapsulated cells are very stable and can be stored frozen for extended periods of time and then easily reactivated for use.
Dr. Robert Ryan, CEO of Nuvilex, commented on the acquisition, “This landmark achievement solidifies our commitment to being a leading force in the biotechnology arena. The technological advancement creating encapsulated living cells is a remarkable breakthrough. Our newly acquired technology will allow oncologists to deliver live cells capable of creating localized high levels of chemotherapeutic drugs within the pancreatic tumor itself while minimizing the serious side effects often associated with such cancer treatment. With pancreatic cancer responsible for 36,800 annual deaths in the U.S. alone in 2010, bringing this technology to market quickly is a top priority for Nuvilex.”
