Responding to a new report launched by the National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN), which followed newly diagnosed lung cancer patients in England between 2004-2006 for six months after diagnosis to see if they had surgery to treat their cancer, Ciaran Devane, Chief Executive at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
‘It is simply appalling that only half as many (nine per cent) lung cancer patients in England had surgery compared to those in many parts of the world (20 per cent).
‘Your chance of surviving lung cancer is higher the earlier it is diagnosed and operated on. It is shocking that only 25 per cent of men and women under 40 with lung cancer are having surgery in England and that this falls further to just two percent in the over 80s. It is absolutely crucial that lung cancer patients get better access to surgery to give them the best chance of surviving. Patients of all ages deserve to get the best medical care possible from the NHS when they have cancer.
‘Lung cancer remains the commonest cause of cancer death in the UK. Every year more than 39,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer [1]. 35,000 people die from it every year [2]. The figures speak for themselves. We urge the Government to address this issue so our lung cancer survival rates rise and equal those of the best in the world.’
