The Irish Cancer Society will hold the Bowel Cancer Support Group’s Annual National Bowel Cancer Seminar on April 2nd, 2011 at the Alexander Hotel, Dublin 2. This event is free of charge and open to all affected by, or with an interest in, bowel cancer.

More About this Seminar
As part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month (April 2011), the Irish Cancer Society, in association with the Bowel Cancer Support Group, will hold a free national Bowel Cancer Patient Seminar on Saturday 2nd of April in the Alexander Hotel, Dublin 2 from 9am-4pm.
The aim of the seminar is to support, reassure and provide factual advice to those affected by the disease. A wide range of relevant topics will be covered including; bowel cancer services, diet & bowel cancer, sexuality, rectal cancer treatment and life after bowel treatment. The Irish Cancer Society is encouraging those worried about bowel cancer to avail of this free public event.
The event comprises a range of workshops and presentations tailored to give patients and their families a better perspective of the disease. Eminent keynote speakers include Dr Brian O’Neill, Consultant Radiation Oncologist, Beaumont Hospital; Marianne Doran, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Stoma Care, Beaumont Hospital; and Pauline Sheils, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Sexuality, National Rehabilitation Hospital.
Olwyn Ryan, Patient Support Groups Manager, Irish Cancer Society says: “This seminar is a chance for patients and their families to get a holistic view of bowel cancer. Members of the Bowel Cancer Support Group will be on hand to reassure those who are feeling overwhelmed by the disease. They organise peer to peer support groups which can make a hugely beneficial impact on those coping with this cancer.”
Bowel cancer can occur in men and in women. In Ireland it is the second most common cancer. In 2009, there were 2271 people diagnosed with it. It is also the second most common cause of cancer death in Ireland.
The Irish Cancer Society’s Cancer Information Service (CIS) also offers advice, information and support to anyone concerned or affected about bowel or any cancer.
