AICR’s New “Breast Cancer Prevention Pack Prevention Pack” Offers Health Fair Organizers The Science And Strategies To Prevention
To support October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) is now offering the AICR Breast Cancer Prevention Pack, one convenient packet of science-based materials to help women prevent breast cancer through basic lifestyle changes.
“We now know that by maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active and limiting the amount of alcohol, women can dramatically reduce their risk of breast cancer,” said AICR Nutritionist Alice Bender, MS RD. “We’re excited we now have one set of materials perfect for health fairs to show women we can lower our risk of breast cancer through everyday choices.”
Prevent Almost 40% of Breast Cancers
The materials in the AICR Breast Cancer Prevention Pack are based on the largest review of research into lifestyle and breast cancer ever conducted.
The American Institute for Cancer Research/World Cancer Research Fund (AICR/WCRF) report, released in 2009, found that four lifestyle changes – staying lean, drinking less alcohol, moving more, and breastfeeding – could prevent 38 percent of breast cancer cases in the U.S. every year. That figure translates into preventing approximately 70,000 breast cancer cases annually.
The AICR/WCRF report was an update to the breast cancer chapter of Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective, the expert report on cancer prevention published by AICR and WCRF in 2007.
Steps towards a Healthier Life
The brochures and health aids in the packet address the lifestyle-related causes of breast cancer and offer specific changes women can make to lower their risk and prevent recurrence.
The The AICR Breast Cancer Prevention Pack includes:
1. Reducing Your Risk of Breast Cancer – an overview of breast cancer prevention
2. The Facts about Alcohol – information on how alcohol affects breast cancer risk
3. The New American Plate – AICR’s popular guide, with recipes, for eating for a healthy weight
4. AICR Guidelines Magnet – developed to help women remember their daily physical activity
5. BSE Shower Card – A waterproof “how to” and monthly reminder for breast self-exams
The packet, designed to meet budget constraints, is priced approximately 25 percent lower than ordering each item individually.
“This is an accessible one-handout guide to help women take the first steps toward healthier choices,” said Bender.
